Dume Cove, Point Dume State Beach, Malibu, California February 20, 2014 2:10 pm–3:13 pm breezy and sunny 63 °F long-sleeved shirt (sleeves pushed up partway), quick-dry hiking pants, bare feet, sun hat sat on rock on wet sand 10 yards from surf roar and crash of waves coming in calls of a few sea birds delighted screams of my children chased by changing edges of surf relaxed chatter of beachgoers delicate salty sandy summery smell toes curled through sand saw lizards on walk there and back; crabs and a sea anemone in tide pool; gull and pelicans sailing over the waves; sea lions sunning on rocks off point, playing in water; whales spouting—a mother and calf hugging the shoreline, two others, separately, farther out
